Farming Nitrogen

Despite an abundance of raw nitrogen in the air, the difficulty in manufacturing nitrogen fertiliser has always been with the processing technology needed to convert the nitrogen gas into a form that plants can uptake; such as a nitrate form, or more commonly, the ammonium form.

For nearly 100 years, the same basic fossil fuel (and emission) intensive process has dominated the manufacturing of nitrogen fertiliser - resulting in ~2% of annual global carbon emissions.

The good news for the environment is that a range of improved and completely alternative, low-emission pathways to process atmospheric nitrogen into fertiliser are emerging.

In addition, some emerging nitrogen processing technologies will be deployable at a regional or farm scale, and have the potential to eliminate emissions associated with fertiliser transport altogether.

We call the combined processes of manufacturing low emission nitrogen fertilisers and reducing transport:
“FarmN”.  Farming Nitrogen.

To accelerate investment in low emission intensity nitrogen fertiliser manufacture, FarmN has developed the world's first technology-neutral methodology to reward the lower emission intensities associated with more sustainable manufacturing processes and reduced transport.

Our Story

FarmN began as the ambitious vision of Greg Butler, an Organic Chemist and seasoned leader in the adoption of sustainable agriculture innovation for over 30 years.

His contributions as a practicing Agronomist and as the Research & Development Manager with both Agrilink International (2000-2004) and the South Australian No-Till Farmers Association (2006-2023) has inspired the adoption of farming technologies that represent world’s best practice for soil health and crop performance.

His approach gained him a reputation as a sought-after expert in farming-systems projects across the Americas, Africa and throughout most of Australia.

In 2011, Greg took centre stage at a farmer’s conference to share a game-changing idea:

"with the right carbon off-set methodology, the financial hurdle holding back the necessary transition from existing conventional fertiliser plants (located at the world’s natural-gas hubs) to low-emission fertiliser plants will be overcome."

Moreover, because nitrogen in the air is ubiquitous, Greg also envisions a future where a decentralized supply chain with regional nitrogen fertiliser production would complement more efficient large-scale production facilities.

For this vision to be realised, improved technology, hybrid systems and completely new technological processes are needed; and they are arriving.

Greg believes the invention of the photovoltaic cell completely re-imagined distributed, residential and commercial, electrical generation directly from the sun and this is a blueprint for regional fertiliser manufacturing. Whereby, both are underpinned by an abundance of raw materials (Sun and Air) and are limited only by human ingenuity.

The FarmN methodology (published by Gold StandardTM) for the production of low emission nitrogen fertiliser is the world’s first technology-neutral methodology for generating high-value carbon-credits for reduced production emissions and reduced transport emissions.

With the potential for high value carbon credits to be generated from the FarmN methodology, we will drive investment and unlock a sustainable agricultural future.

At FarmN, we’re not just growing food—we’re growing a future where agriculture thrives sustainably, locally, and profitably.
